Often crucial conversations are avoided because we either don’t know our people or unwilling to be vulnerable so that we can connect.
Leaders, as with any relationship, be it personal or professional, we must connect to converse. Again, we must connect to converse in wholehearted conversation. Why wholehearted you may ask? Think about it, if you must tell a person they are not performing well, or engaging in a tough conversation, it is beneficial to know your audience. It's just that simple.
To connect with your people, get to know WHO they are and show WHO you are. We all want to be understood. We all desire to display our best selves. To do so, we must feel safe, seen and heard.
True story: my best manager and I had an amazing relationship. We communicated openly and honestly. We made a pact to keep it 100% real with one another. In doing so, I was able to bring my best self to work, knowing if ever I fell short on my deliverables, I TRUSTED I would be made aware and provided the guidance to do better and confidence to BE BETTER! That relationship could not exist without CONNECTING and CONVERSING!
That’s just my 2 cents - keep the change. Better yet, be the change.
